Behind NDP 2024 Pack Artworks
Explore how this year's NDP theme 'Together, as One United People' is embodied in six artworks that commemorate the six Pillars of our nation's Total Defence on its 40th Anniversary.
Earlier this year, 40 student artists with disabilities from 22 schools came together for a collaborative two-day workshop facilitated by the NDP Pack Committee and SG Enable, and supported by Temenggong Artists-In-Residence. These artists, who hail from diverse backgrounds, delved into their individual perspectives on our nation’s culture and history to represent the different facets of Total Defence.
Artists from all diverse backgrounds came together at Enabling Village to create artworks reflecting Singapore's Total Defence pillars. Under the guidance of Mr Henri Chen Kezhan and Ms Lee Kai Ling Reis, the first workshop - Interwoven Inspirations underscored the students’ capacity to transcend barriers, fostering camaraderie and individual expression. In the second workshop - Unity in Diversity, students honed their creations, surmounting obstacles with unwavering commitment and collaborative effort, exemplifying the power of unity.
Workshop 1 - Interwoven Inspiration
Guided by artists from Temenggong Artists-in-Residence, the students unleashed their boundless creative potential.
Drawing inspiration from Singapore’s six Pillars of Total Defence, the students embarked on creating their artworks from scratch. Infusing their distinctive perspectives into their designs, they communicated personal narratives, interwoven with facets of Singaporean culture, creating profoundly inspired artworks.
The workshop successfully fostered avenues for self-expression and camaraderie among participants, has paved the way for a highly anticipated second instalment.
Workshop 2 - Unity in Diversity
During the second workshop, a notable surge in creativity and collaboration emerged among the students as they gathered once again to refine their designs for this year’s NDP Packs.
Familiarity with the workshop process empowered the students to push their creative boundaries, with some taking the initiative to prepare their materials beforehand at home. Despite their different backgrounds and disabilities, they united through a shared affection and pride for Singapore.
Merging their unique interpretations of the six Pillars of Total Defence with their own individual experiences, the students crafted deeply personal artworks encapsulating life in Singapore. From iconic national landmarks to the intricacies of our local transport system, and even the beloved community cats, the students’ artworks are uniquely Singaporean.
Guided by dedicated teachers and volunteers, the students’ individual artworks were combined to form six designs representing the six pillars of Total Defence.
The cumulation of these efforts is manifested in the final six artworks, each a testament to the students’ dedication and unity, reaffirming the idea that we are stronger together, as one united people.
